Writing skills that stick.
Year by year, skill by skill.
Fifty targeted writing exercises, each mapped to the NZ English Curriculum 2026 โ with a structured teaching framework, Curriculum Progress Descriptors, and an AI-powered coaching tool that works with teachers and independently with students.
What is the Skills Builder?
The Scribo Skills Builder is a structured set of fifty writing practice exercises designed to develop specific, curriculum-named writing skills across Years 4 to 8. Each exercise isolates one skill โ so students can focus on mastering it without the cognitive load of managing a full piece of writing simultaneously.
Every exercise is directly mapped to the NZ English Curriculum 2026, specifying the element, sub-element, and type (Knowledge or Practice). Each includes a teaching rationale that explains why the skill is placed at that year level and what makes it developmentally appropriate.
The Structure of Each Exercise
Curriculum Progress Descriptors
The Curriculum Progress Descriptors describe what a student can do โ not where they rank. Each level names a specific quality of response, so feedback is always about the skill, not effort or character.
A Deliberate Progression Across Five Years
Flexible for Teachers, Clear for Students
Each exercise works as a standalone 15โ20 minute session โ and can be activated at any time. Teachers can use it to pre-teach a skill, assess a specific writing move, or generate class discussion. Students can also work through exercises independently, with the Claro AI coach providing the teaching structure, feedback, and progression built in.
Claro Powered Personalised Coaching
Our Claro Writing Coach is an interactive AI support built around the Skill Builder exercises. For each exercise, Claro walks students through the concept, worked examples, and their own practice โ providing immediate feedback aligned to the Curriculum Progress Descriptors.
